P.E.

At Hawksworth Wood Primary School we encourage children to foster a life-long love of physical activity and competitive sport. We deliver an engaging curriculum that meets our pupils’ wide range of needs and enables pupils to develop their skills and self-confidence in a supportive learning environment.

In the Early Years, we recognise that physical activity is vital for a child’s all-round development. Pupils are introduced to different movements. We plan for activities to develop their strength, coordination, balance and agility in our indoor and outdoor areas. We also plan for developing children’s gross and fine motor skills.

From year 1, the children experience dance, athletics, games, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities. In key stage 1, children experience a range of invasion, striking and fielding and sending and receiving games which are applied to specific sports in key stage 2. We enhance the curriculum planning from the Get Set 4 PE scheme with specialist teaching from various outside agencies to ensure our PE lessons provide stimulating, challenging and enjoyable learning.

Swimming lessons happen in Year 4 where the children visit a local pool each week for this part of the curriculum. We also offer ‘Top Up’ swimming classes to year 5 and 6 pupils for intensive course of lessons.

At Hawksworth Wood, we value playtimes and lunchtimes as an opportunity to develop children’s physical activity too and have a fabulous newly developed playgrounds which offer challenges such as climbing and cycling.
