Hawksworth Wood Governing Body

The Governing Body at Hawksworth Wood

All schools in England have a Governing Board which is responsible for overseeing many of the strategic decisions of the school. The governing board conducts its business to take account of the three roles of the governing board as outlined in the Governance handbook:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

The day to day management of the school is the responsibility of the Head teacher and senior leadership team.

The full governing board meets four times a year; all full governing board meetings are clerked by a trained professional clerk.  The governing board ensures it covers all statutory duties and fulfils the strategic responsibilities. This is done through the six full Governing board meetings, face to face (visits into school), information provided by the Headteacher and members of the leadership team and external sources such as the school improvement adviser and national data.

We also have 3 subcommittee groups which meet 3 times per year who have a sharper focus on specific areas of the school. There are:

  • Resources subcommittee
  • Pupil support sub committee
  • Teaching and Learning Subcommittee

The Role of the Governing Body

As set out in the DfE Governance Handbook, the purpose of governance is ‘to provide confident strategic leadership and to create robust accountability, oversight and assurance for educational and financial performance.’

A governing body has the following 3 core functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure money is well spent.

If you are interested in becoming a governor for our school, please contact the school office.
