Science
Science
In Science at Hawksworth Wood Primary, we aim to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the world surrounding us. This begins in EYFS, where Science is included within the Understanding the World area of learning. The children mainly learn science through practical investigation, games and play. For example, which objects float or sink during water play. Activities like these help the children develop important observational, practical and critical thinking skills. This continues to progress as they move up through school. The children will progress from performing simple tests and recording simple data in Year 1, to planning and carrying out fair tests in Year 6 and being able to draw conclusions from the results and present the data using a range of graphs and charts.
We want all children to recognise how Science contributes to our past, present and future. Throughout their time in school, the pupils will build upon their previous learning to develop a complex knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We aim to deliver an inclusive and meaningful Science curriculum, so all pupils may experience the joy and wonder of Science!
Our Science curriculum encourages critical thinking and empowers pupils to question the hows and whys of the world around them and learn to challenge misconceptions. The children will develop their Scientific literacy using a wide range of specialist vocabulary. The Science curriculum includes six key areas: Animals including humans, Living things and Habitats, Materials, Energy, Forces, Earth and Space and finally Plants.
