PSHE/Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

PSHE / Relationship & Sex Education

At Hawksworth Wood Primary School our PSHE curriculum is reflective of our school values of ‘Be safe, Be Kind, Be Ready to Learn’.

PSHE education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. Our learning journey begins in reception, where children learn to explore and express their ideas and feelings in appropriate ways, whilst building positive relationships with others.

As children move through school, we equip them with the skills and knowledge to make healthy and safe decisions when living in modern society by teaching about healthy lifestyles, building positive friendships, keeping safe and managing emotions.

The PSHE curriculum taught at Hawksworth Wood Primary School also covers the statutory requirements of Relationships Education and Health Education, which teaches children how to form safe and healthy relationships and understand the changes that may happen to them as they grow.

At Hawksworth Wood Primary School, we have made a carefully researched decision to follow the Kapow Scheme of work. Kapow’s primary scheme takes a spiral approach to teaching which ensures key areas of learning will be revisited and further developed as children progress through school. Subject content in each year group is taught at an appropriate level for the pupils’ age and developmental stage, building on previous learning.

To ensure our pupils are provided with a comprehensive PSHE offer, we enhance our curriculum through to teaching of Mindmate lessons and No Outsiders sessions each half term. These additional learning opportunities support pupils to develop positive mental health, promote understanding of our own lifestyles and beliefs whilst learning tolerance and respect for others who may have different lifestyles, beliefs or values to our own.
