Geography at Hawksworth Wood Primary School

The geography curriculum at Hawksworth Wood inspires curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. The teachers equip pupils with knowledge about diverse locations, cultures and resources found in natural and human environments.

Through engaging lessons, they develop a deep understanding of the earth’s key physical and human processes. Our geography curriculum encourages the children to explore, learn and ask questions about the local area and the dynamic, fascinating world around. We think about how it has an impact on everything we know and do in our normal everyday lives. We encourage the children to realise how geographers hold the keys to some of the world and humankind’s greatest wonders, as well as the solution to some of the world’s key problems.

As pupils progress through school, they will become more confident, capable and enthusiastic geographers, enabling them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between the physical and human world. The children will develop their locational and place knowledge, becoming confident in using maps, atlases and compasses to locate and describe places across the globe.

The children will be encouraged and guided to ask questions about our changing planet and how this affects people and their surroundings. We will find out about a variety of landscapes and environments, where things are found, why they are there and how they develop and change over time.

We aim to ensure that all children at Hawksworth Primary, have the foundation and inspiration to continue their fascination and exploration of our wonderful planet earth, throughout their future lives, however that might evolve.
